Happy Birthday Coach

What memories fly thru my head as I type this.  Really, has it been 40 years?  And, yet, it also seems like another life.  Anyway, I've traveled further west with each move, but it looks like we are in Phoenix to stay since our three and soon to be four grandkids are here.

Coach, you said one time that even if we were fortunate to play college ball we would always look back on the high school time with more fondness, and you are right . . . except for Coach Couch throwing things.

Here's a pic of our crew taken in August.  Yes, the old guy in the back is me.   Best wishes to you and your family on your 70th.

Blessed because of you...

Uncle Don,

It seems like yesterday that we gathered as kids at Grandma and Pepaw’s...you were always there with something funny to say and a new story about U of H. Thank you for setting such an example as a man of God and family man. Thank you for introducing me to U of H and setting my sites on a future that included the trials and triumphs of being involved in college athletics. You and Dad and the other Todd brothers showed each of us the importance of family and holding those dear to us close. I feel blessed to be a member of your family and called you Uncle.

Love,

Chris

What A Legacy.

There have been many times when I wished I had been fortunate enough to have had even one coach like you when I was growing up. Out of all of the coaches for whom I played, none made the kind of impression on me that you made on literally hundreds of young men over the years. You drove them to be and achieve more than they could have done on their own, or could have even dreamed. But it has gone so much further than that. You served as the only "father" that so many of them ever really had. You taught them how to win and how to handle loss. That is importnt in football, but so much moreso in life. Your teaching and example have served them well in both scenarios. You have been and remain shining example of someone who is always willing to give whatever he has to others who need it - whether it is advice, a helping hand, material needs, encouragement or just an attentive ear. Moreover, you have handled incredible disappointment, illness and constant pain with a grace and toughness that are literally other-worldly. There is no doubt that God has, for reasons unknown to us until we meet him face to face, seen fit to place you in such a role. I can tell you this, for certain, though: The halls of heaven will be much fuller because of your influence on and example to so many. Wins and losses aside, that's what matters most.

No, I never had a coach like you. Unfortunately, a lot of young men did not. But even less young men had a Dad like you. I do. What a blessing that is! How many kids get to stand next to their father and get to be a part of what he does for a living? Yes, I have had to share you with countless others. But, I have come to understand over these many years that this was your calling. It was your ministry. God had young men He needed to reach and He needed someone who, much like His Son, would meet them where they are and provide them with a "real life" example of how to live, lead and, more importantly, how to serve - regardless of what curves life may throw you.

Thank you for staying the course, even in the most challenging circumstances; for never surrendering; for teaching me the true meaning of perseverence and selflessness; for always being my biggest supporter and for your unconditional love. You are the very definition of a real man and I am more proud than you will ever know to be able to call you Dad.

I love you, Dad.

Greg

Happy Birthday, Don!

I hope you have a super day, today and every day!!! I know that you've positively influenced many, many people in your 70 years (Say it ain't so!!! I'm nipping right at your heels!)
Your legacy is the countless young men who have grown up under your watchful eye and have been much better men for the experience. And it's not just your players. There are many others of us who have been positively influenced by your assurance, your convictions, and your steadfast approach to life. Please know that I include our family in that group! We are some of your biggest fans!
Love you,
Sally

Happy Birthday, Don!

Don,
You have hit another milestone.
I thank God for you on a daily basis. Your example of integrity & Christian values has been a bright light to all of us--family & friends alike. There will never be another "Scrap Iron" with the toughness & gentleness that has been a true mentor to so many. Few people will ever have the respect & love that you have earned--& deserve. I could not have had a better brother-in-law for my precious Kay. I know that Uncle Don has been a great influence to Josh & Jake. Sally & I love you and respect you more than you could ever know.
Give Kay a big hug & kiss for me.
God bless you on this special day.......
Love you,
Gary

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

What fun it has been putting together this surprise for you, knowing full well the extent of the response we would get from those who know and love you! I am so grateful to God for blessing me with a father who has been such a picture of God's love for me. I am honored to be your daughter, and am so proud of you. You have persevered through more than your fair share of trials, only to have an even stronger impact on others and reflect God's glory even brighter. Your faithfulness is a huge part of my personal testimony of faith in our great God. You have always been and always will be my hero! I love you, Daddy!

Happy Birthday Hugs!

Hey, Coach Todd!
Chances are you don't remember me, but I always remembered you as one of my favorite teachers during my Sophomore year at Carter High School in 1971-1972.   Lynnette Hughes, Valerie Gallo, and I were in your Biology class.   I've laughed many times with friends over the years about asking you a question, only to have you lick your first two fingers, then drag them down the lenses of my aviatior glasses...good dang thing I finally got Lasik!

Happy, Happy Birthday to you, and I wish you many more years and countless blessings.

Karen Bruyere

Happy Birthday Uncle Don

Dear Uncle Don,
When I think back on memories of you, so many of them are associated with your position with the Cougars. As a kid it was the coolest thing to see you on TV coaching those young men on to victory. Each game I watched I was seriously engaged from my living room cheering the Coogs on. As I have grown I become more aware of what you really did with your time at Uof H. You did not just coach players, you invested into young men's lives with your own life. National rankings, Cotton Bowl victories, and the like are enjoyable at the time and denote a level of success. The problem with success is that it is only temporary. You however have been pouring your life into something much more than temporal success. Through your faith, example, love, and compassion you have invested your life into the lives of others that has produced men of character & faith. By the worlds' standards that may not be considered successful, but our Lord considers your life one of significance. You have helped develop in others that which will not fade with time - you have developed faith and character. Those are eternal. Thank you for providing an example to so many. For remaining faithful man of integrity when those in authority over you were not. You are one of my heros. Happy Birthday. Phil Todd

Happy Birthday Coach !

My dear friend and Coach,

Accept our most sincere congratulations as you celebrate the day.

Thank you for sharing your life with our family over the years, and we pray for  many
more returns of the day.

Happy Birthday, Coach!

Coach,

when i sat down last evening to draft a note to you in remembrance of your birthday, i
wanted to expound on the note i wrote a week or so back.

the term "coach" might be to me the greatest title that anyone can call a person.
only surpassed by the label  "dad",  but certainly in the same zip code !

when we have any time in our lives to reflection, most of the lessons of life were taught
to us through lessons on the green stripped pasture by those caring individuals we love,
have known as "coaches"

like friends, coaches come in categories, with favorites and stories attached to each and every one.

the folks that were lucky enough to play organized ( and some unorganized ) sports came in
contact with role models and life instructors, chock full up with lessons for life that would serve mankind well to hear.

all of our fate was molded by men who took the time to listen to those that came before them, and shared their lessons with us.  hard to believe that there were coaches way back then,
but all those whistle toting men learned the good stuff from other coaches.  and we are ALL better for those lessons remembered !    lessons came to us in different ways and in different times, and not all learned them in the same order.   our successes in life are all to a degree relative to those lessons we listened to and retained to re-teach to our children.

i was privileged to have passed by and trough the lives of some real characters as coaches.
i have the opportunity to meet a number of my childhood hero's that were all coaches as i grew up. Names like bryant, dietsel, mcclendon, royal, phillips, gillioz, dorsett to name a few.

when our life paths crossed i hope you know the instant rapport' that made me feel at ease and
to be an instant listener was evidenced my head and heart.  i know some of your players may not know the actual day or date of your birth, but without exception i know each of those lives that you touched are somewhere today as a result of lessons learned under your tutelage by seeing how you live your life day to day.

one of the most proud moments for me was when you and kay came to bradley's graduation dinner.
his god given ability was enhanced by a multitude of lessons and experiences in life.  he nor i will forget the time and effort extended in his behalf with your friends matta, kendal and art in waco.  i felt like he should have been there from the start and the series of events and the constant attention from new mexico resulted in a different path taken.  overcoming poor choices is another lesson learned.

we are proud to count you as a friend , honored to have experienced you in our corner, and are ever indebted to you for your experiences, integrity, and for sharing you life lessons with our family and the many other athletes and friends that have had the privilege to share and cross your path.

God has richly blessed you in this life with purpose, friends and family.

in the distant future, i know exactly what he will  say when he greets in heaven......

"WELCOME COACH !   WELL DONE, MY FAITHFUL FRIEND  !"

Special Birthday greetings Coach !

Coach Todd,

My thoughts are with you on this special day as you celebrate with friends and family.

I will never forget all you have done for me and my family, and wanted to know how
much you mean to us all !   We hope for you many happy returns of the day my friend !

Happy Birthday Coach!!

It is hard to believe that 31 years ago, you sat in my home and convinced me and my parents that UH was the right place for me. It was your sincerity and integrity that came through and separated YOU from all the other coaches. Over the years, you continue to be consistent in your beliefs: Put God First, Love your Family and Cherish your Friends.

Thanks for being You...the impact you have had on my life is immeasurable and helped to mold me into the man I am today. Peace and Blessings to you and your family always!!

Happy Happy Birthday Coach !

Dear Coach,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DON!

You don't know, Don, what a pleasure it has been to have you, Kay, Greg and Jenna in our lives. Your faith and spirit has seen you thru so much and you did it with such grace. You have been a great influence on the lives of so many young men and lots of others, too.
Thank you for being there for Billy. We knew we could always count on you. You were a very good friend to both of us.

You and Kay have raised a wonderful family. I'm sure your strong faith has carried over to them. I know they are very proud of you.

I have so many memories (all good) from our football days. Not room for all of them.

I wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY and may you have many more.

Happy Birthday, Coach Todd!

Dear Coach Todd,

Natalie and I just wanted to wish you a Happy 70th birthday. God is still very good and all the time. It's trully amazing how He brought us together and then allowed you to introduce me to my wife of 31 years. I thank Him for using you to be an instrument for His Glory. Coach, please forgive me for my being away for so long, but with God's help, I will strive to do better. Please know that my wife and I have an extra special place for you and your family within our hearts. May God bless you with many many more. To God Be The Glory!

Happy 70th Birthday Coach Todd,
Thank you, for always being there for me and my family.

In God's Hand,

Willis and Natalie.

Happy Birthday Coach!!!

Coming from a Catholic School for 9 years into a big public school, left me with a lot of insecurities. I was so blessed the day that you entered my pathway. I always considered you my friend, not just the Coach. I was so lucky to be your babysitter for Greg and Jenna and cherished my time with them. One time you saved me from a guy who was pestering me. He happened to be a football player and you kindly (I am sure) told him to back off. I loved you for that!!!! You also gave me some good advice along the way (unfortunately I did not listen and it would have changed my life) and I always knew you really cared about me. Kay was always so sweet and I considered your family as dear friends. I was honored that you and Kay allowed Jenna to be in my wedding. I hope you have a wonderful birthday and I am so glad that we have gotten back in touch through email recently. You are a wonderful man!!!!

Love to all,
Joni Janacek Garrick

Happy Birthday!

Hey Coach!

Happy 70th!  In addition to wishing you a happy birthday, I also wanted to thank you for always being there for our family.  You've been with us through happiness and tribulation, whether supporting  Mom through her battle with cancer, to visiting our Kimberley when she was a baby, to allowing her to ride and help you with the horses, to helping out Greg with that silly Studebaker during a flood, to being a stand-in Daddy to me when I lost mine.  You've been more than kind and have always gone out of your way.  We love you, and wish you many more happy and productive days of inspiring us all!

Love to you and yours,

Lisa Mooney
Coach, Happy 70!  Just wanted to tell you how much I have appreciated your friendship through the years. You are truly an inspiration and have touched so many lives during our journey through life. You are an amazing role model, father, husband and wish you the best today and everyday you share with us all.

HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY, COACH TODD!

While much has been written about the amazing influence you have had on so many young men’s lives, I believe that you have enriched the lives of just as many girls and young women.  From Atwell to Carter to U of H, you were that shining light for us as well.  We have loved you as a teacher, a drivers ed instructor, a mentor, and as a friend.  When you were called to be a coach, did you have any idea that girls were part of the deal?  We always knew that you cared as much for us and about us as you did for all the boys who were your real responsibility.  You taught me about life (learning to navigate the Dairy Queen drive-thru is an important life skill!) and helped me become an adult.  You have enriched my life and the lives of my family.  Thank you so much for everything you have done.  I pray that you and your family will be blessed with many more years and cherished memories.
Love,
Laurie Larimer Galiunas

Coach Todd - Life Coach

Coach,

When I first had the opportunity to be coached by you.....I knew you were somebody different. You didn't just coach us in the sport, you coached us in life. Amazingly for me, you still are. You have been there for me through anything I needed, and I can't tell you how much I love you for that. You are the most influential person in my life, and still remain that to this day. I chose coaching as a profession, and not a day goes by I don't ask myself "how would coach do it?" You have been THE role model for me.... and the greatest example in coaching of "how it is done." You showed me it is about the relationships, not the game.

I hope that you have a great day with friends and family! I am looking forward to seeing you when the season is over, and I am real glad that we are closer to you and Kay. You are the best!!

Talk to you soon...... Have a great day! Happy Birthday!

Coach Todd, you are a central figure in the story of the Nix family. Your leadership and mentoring while coaching the Nix brothers has helped to shape another generation of our family. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH TODD !

Where does one begin to wish a happy birthday to one of the greatest individuals I have ever met! How blessed am I. Some of my happiest moments in my life were at the University of Houston. I met incredible people, many of them friends for life. Somehow, though, you recognize when you meet someone special...someone different and you are lucky enough to realize it. Coach Todd, you will always stand out as one of my favorite people, ever. When I think back to my early days at UH, yes I think of my education, but the COOGS and Coach Todd are at the top of my list. I remember telling you that I wanted to be the first female college football coach...you didn't laugh at me, well, maybe there was a grin...You were always so positive with all the young players...you always seemed to have time for everybody and you ALWAYS had a smile on your face. We all go through life with trials and tribulations and have our crosses to bear...memories of you, always put a smile on my face, no matter what I have faced in my life! I guess what I am really trying to say is that you are 1 in a 1,000,000,000. You are very rare. You are so many things to so many people and I am so happy that I had the honor of knowing you while in Houston. I truly thank the Lord for allowing me to have the blessing of you as a friend. You will probably never really understand the depth of what you mean to your friends and family. Suffice it to say that people are fortunate to have you in their lives. Have a wonderful, wonderful, birthday with your family!                  Surviving outside of Texas...(in St. Louis).....Susan Dunn (Kilian)

Coach, Mentor, Best Man & Life-Long Friend

Coach Todd,

Happy Birthday!!!!!!! (7 x ! = 70)

I hope you have a great day with Kay, Greg, Jenna and their families.  I remember one of our first meetings
back in the summer of 1969.  You were teaching driver's ed and you stopped by and talked with me about
playing at Carter while I was working as a brick laborer at a house near Oak Cliff Country Club.  From that
day forward there are so many other memories I have about our long and cherished friendship.

Asking you to be my "Best Man" was a no brainer.  You were the "BEST" in my book. There was no doubt
that I wanted to model my life and marriage after yours!   By the way, you must
have been a pretty good choice as Debbi has kept me around for 35 years!  We have shared a lot of pleasant
memories both on and off the football field.  You have played many roles in my life - coach, friend,
brother and have been like a father to me as well.  God knew that I needed a strong role model in my life -
so He made sure that our paths would cross!   I truly appreciate everything you have done for me.
I look forward to making many more memories throughout our lifetime and I figure with all you've been through,
God still has lots of unfinished work for you!

I know that we don't get to see you as often as we used to, but you are always close in our hearts!  The
way that you have always loved us and our children is so heartwarming and you'll never know the sense
of peace that I have in my heart knowing that you love us and pray for us each and every day.  I have
grown so much by knowing you and having you two share your wisdom with me!  You have always made
time to listen to the two of us throughout the years and for that we are eternally grateful that God
placed you into our lives!  Who knew that back in 1969 on that first encounter that our friendship
would blossom into  such a beautiful one!

You, Kay and your family have a very special place in our hearts and our family is very blessed that our paths
crossed with yours!  We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays!  Enjoy your day, Coach and
as you sit back and reflect on this day, take comfort in knowing that you have touched so many lives
in your 70 years...you are amazing!

Enjoy #70 and look to #80!

Love ya,
Joe and Debbi Rust & the rest of the fam

Happy Birthday Coach Todd

Coach Todd,

I want to wish you a very happy birthday!  Coach you were a big influence on my life.  For what you have taught me, I am trying to pass it on to future football players like my nephew.  Thanks for all of the knowledge that you have given me and pray you have a wonderful birthday!

Happy Birthday Coach

It is without doubt a privilege and a pleasure to convey to you a profound hope for a blessed and happy 70th birthday. As we move through the poetry of time our reflections of the places and people we have met change into myths and epics. Folk become grander and more meaningful than they were in our past. Occasionally, we remember someone who cannot become anymore grander than they actually were. You were a bright light in an often dark world. You helped me to have a better life and taught me values of rectitude, mutuality, and forbearance. We who were blessed to travel through your circle of live are forever thankful, for in your presence life was better. Or to use a football metaphor, when God made you, he outkicked his punt coverage.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH TODD (SCRAP IRON)

Don:

It has been a long time time our freshman days at HSU. I remember the first time I met you in Ferguson Hall; you were recovering from knee surgery and I had brought you a telephone message. From that time our friendship grew; we shared many laughs and tight times after our marriages. After graduation we reconnected in Houston living in the same neighborhood and watching our kids grow. We are thankful for the memories you created for our son in letting him roam the sidlines with Greg.

Even though we don't see each other now, Linda and I count you and Kay among our best friends. We have watched from afar how you have persevered and kept the faith. You have touched many young men's lifes in such a positive way and have been an outstanding example of a Godly man whose has lived out his faith.

Wishing you a very blessed 70th and many more to come.

Duane & Linda Dunham

Happy Birthday, Coach

Coach Todd,  how do I find the words to express how extremely blessed and fortunate I have been to have had you in my life.  You have been a huge influence on me, both as a coach and as a friend.  The lessons about life that I learned from being coached by you as a high school player (hard work, perseverance, character, respect, etc.) and the life's lessons I've learned from you over the years through our friendship, through observing the manner in which you have lived your life, and through the faith in God you have shared with me and others, are things I will always cherish.

THANK YOU, for all you have done for me, and for all you have done for the multitude of young men and women whose lives you have influenced and touched.  You are truly an inspiration to me and an example for all of us to follow.

Love you, Coach .............God Bless You.

David Bratton

Happy 70th Birthday Mr Todd!!!

I'm so happy to get the chance to tell you Happy Birthday in such a special way! You are an incredible man worthy of recognition and thanks! When I look at you or think about you, so many qualities come to mind. I guess my first thought is that you're a man of strong faith. A definite role model and inspiration to everyone. I admire and respect your devotion to God and your family. With your faith and love for God, I see your love for your family and all those you touch. When I think of you, I see a teacher. I think of strength, love, honor, honesty, integrity, wisdom, dedication, the "right" thing to do, strong morals, consistency, and a heart for others. For as long as I've known Jenn, I've enjoyed listening as she talks so admirably about you. She is so blessed to have you & Kay as parents, and she knows it!! Thank you for all the smiles, hugs, and words of support and encouragement you've given me throughtout the years. Thanks for opening your arms to me and making me feel a part of your wonderful family!! I love and admire you, and I wish you the most wonderful & happy birthday!!!

Love, Debbie

Happy Birthday, Don!

I had a feeling that when we survived speeding through the Plains' intersections with Walter in his old green Nash that we might be lucky enough to live a long life. 70 does not seem too old to me tho, does it to you? I am fortunate to have known you and to have been able to consider you one of my best friends in high school. I see that you have had a very successful life and I am not surprised by that either. It was special to Tanya and me when you and Kay contacted us after a Tech vs Houston game in Lubbock and we all went out together. Thank you for that. Congratulations again on a well-lived life and one that is certainly not over. I wish you many more Happy Birthdays.

Your friend always,

Harmon

Happy 70th

We wish you a very happy birthday Don. Since we moved to Simonton and became your neighbors, both you and Kay have become great friends. I appreciate how you've made us welcome and immediately set a wonderful Christian example. I don't take that for granted. Don you not only inspire and encourage your former players and students, but you continue to touch everyone around you in a positive way. We appreciate that more than you know. I only hope we can be such a blessing to you when you face your own challenges in life. I wish you many many more wonderful years because you're the best neighbor and friend anyone could ever have. I pray you have a wonderful and blessed day celebrating with your family.

Happy 70th Birthday, Coach Todd!

Because of our Abilene connection, (Paul Morrison, Hardin-Simmons, me being born and raised in Abilene) you became my friend. I enjoyed helping you with recruits while at UH. You and your family have become my family's friends too. What a blessing!

You are a one-of-a-kind man. You have such a huge heart, you are so generous with your knowledge and time, you truly care about everyone you know, and you treat all as your best friend. Everyone who knows you loves you and that's an amazing attribute. You have earned so much respect in your life. Congratulations on reaching 70 years of age. You have way out-lived your 9 lives! Blessed to call you "brother"

Dear Don,
My first time to meet you and your family was at Easter the year Clarence and I married. I can remember the "Dangerous" game of spoons as if it happened yesterday. Clarence and I feel blessed on a daily basis that we get to call you brother. Through the years you have been a constant reminder to us that God and Family are the only constants in this life. You have set examples for both of us on how life should be lived and how to take the hand you have been dealt and keep looking at the bright side of life. Thank you for all you have been and all you will continue to be for our family.

Love
Pat and Clarence

Balanced!

Dear Coach,

I never played a down of football for you or with you. I have heard some great stories of games played, games coached, and creative coaching that spread around the leagues and nation. You seem to have excelled in all aspects of the game.

You have, though, shown great skill, which I have observed, as a kind and loving husband and father. I do not get to see the day by day of you being a granddad, but all indications are that you are excelling in that relationship also!

You know a bit about horses.
You are knowledgeable about your faith.
You do not meet many strangers.
Your witness is on target.
Relationships are treasured for years.

Though football has been important to you and your family, and involved a lot of your 70 years, it is great that we have experienced so much more of your depth than just the great ballgames. You are a great example of a balanced life!

You saw potential in young players, and in your men and women off the field, in the community and in the church.
You were patient as people took time to catch on in catching a ball or catching on in life.
You were visionary in going up against offenses and defenses. And you have had to go up against some tough odds in life.

You may be in the later part of the third quarter, or even the fourth, but you have won a lot of games by not quitting! Happy birthday and thanks for the life you have shared with us.

Coach Todd, how do I even begin to express my gratitude to you. For most of my life you have played a valuable role in one way or another. As teacher/coach, mentor and family-like friend. I have memories of you at Atwell and Carter. My sister, Lynnette and I cried the day you left Carter and headed to the University of Houston. Only God knew that a short time later Mike would follow you. Along with Kevin Rollwage, Reid Hansen and Joe Rust. My how these young men looked up to you with respect and admiration. You were a man of your word. Sincere and authentic. They could always count on you. Depend on your support. Trust you. What a difference you made in their lives.

It was like they became apart of your family and a couple of months later, in the fall of 1973, when an airplane crash would take the life of Mike’s dad, you became just that. Family. From that day forward you have prayerfully supported him through every obstacle and every triumph. Watching and waiting with wisdom and encouragement.

You were at our wedding. You and Kay, were excellent role models. You gave us a pattern to follow. You loved our children and they love you.

Thank you for enriching our lives and for making an immeasurable difference in our family. Your ‘daily prayers’ are heard. God is passing on through Coach Spradlin, what you passed onto him. We thank God for the out pouring of His love, through you, Coach Todd …..and the countless thousands that have been touched as well.

You are a champion of a man! A heartfelt hug of gratitude to you and Kay. Your ministry has grown deep and wide. Your reward will be sweet. Also, a special thanks to Greg and Jennifer, for sharing the dad they adore with countless strangers. Your loss, is Christ’s gain.

Happy Birthday, Coach Todd. You are one of the best things that ever happened to me. I love you.

Coach Todd,

I know we've only known each other for relatively short while, but it has been long enough to realize how blessed I am to have met you. You are an amazing person who has had such a positive impact on so many people I know. You truly are a gift from God to those of us who are fortunate enough to call you friend!

May you have a wonderful birthday surrounded by family and friends and always know how much to mean to each and every one of us!

Happy Birthday!

Love,
Pam Wright

Happy Birthday Don

I wanted to join your many friends and wish you all the best on your 70th birthday.
Our days at HSU seem a bit distant, but the friendship that we developed there is very real and lasting.

I enjoyed following your successful career in coaching and I am pleased that you were able to positively influence the many that played for you.

I hope to see you soon.

Coach you made it to the Goal Line and scored

Coach Todd 70?  Geez it is hard to believe how time flies.  Congratulations and HAPPY BIRTHDAY Coach!  It is a testament to your faith and to you as a person that you are so loved, admired and respected by so many after so long.  Everyone of us has our own unique story about you, and how you influenced us.  It is very rewarding that you remember each one of us individually as well.  From a Carter High School football players perspective, you inspired us to play together and to play our best.  We just wanted to do our best to show you, to make you proud of us.  It was quite a reward to get a "good job" from you.  But the best reward we all strained and pushed and ran as fast as we could was to get a smile from you and a slap on the helmet.  It meant so much to all of us.

Thanks for everything, and thanks for believing in us.  We believe in you.

Coach,

There are so many things that I could write, about our time at Carter.  The best way I can say it is that it has been a privilege to have had you as a part of my life, and the honor is all mine.

Happy Birthday, and we hope a whole lot more.

Mike and Marcie Baker

Happy Birthday, Don!

It's hard to believe that you and Jim are 70, and Kay and I won't be far behind. You are our very best friends. We've shared so much, coaching schools, eating together and playing games especially when Brent and Greg were little. So many memories. The one thing that I am so amazed at is your determination no matter how hard things are. Also your faith in GOD to get you through the trials. I love you and Kay so much. I hope you have a wonderful birthday with your precious family.

GOD bless you,
Joy
Thanks for the driving instructions.  I think you put a hole in the passenger side of the floor trying to slow me down.  I'm pretty sure that I got my first C from you in Civics, too.  That's okay, it wasn't the last one.  :o)

I hope you have a wonderful, memorable birthday and many, many more.

Happy Birthday, Coach ... Mr. Todd ... Don!?!

Though with Greg and friends we always refered to you as Don, I could never call you Don in person.  It might convey a lack of respect coming from someone young enough to be - and who in many respects considered himself to be - a son of yours.  But nothing could be further from the truth. "Don," in my vocabularly, stands for a mountain of a man deserving the utmost respect.  (Like "Kay" stands for super-mom!)

I grew up watching you coach and respecting your accomplishments (masking tape notwithstanding).  I grew up watching you love your family and respecting how you extended that love to so many others, myself included.  I grew up watching you love God and respecting how you shared that conviction openly and honestly with others.  All that seems like yesterday to me, so 70 is hard to believe!  The years have passed, and I have not seen you as much as I'd like during that time.  But I have had the opportunity watch Greg in his life journey.  As I continue to enjoy that relationship, my respect for you (and Kay) continues to grow in all that I see in him and all that you instilled in him.

You've been a positive influence in so many lives.  You've brought joy to so many people in so many ways.  I'm grateful for the many ways you've touched and influenced my life, directly and indirectly, and I wish you supreme joy and God's blessings on this special ocassion.  Happy birthday!  Or, if I may be so bold, happy birthday, Don!

Much love, John B.

Happy Birthday Coach Todd

Coach,
Just wanted to wish you a happy 70th.  Your impact has reached beyond even those that you coached.  Every day I try to live and coach the way my parents taught me and based on the stories I was told about you.  I can only hope that one day I would have had the impact on my friends and players that you have had on yours.  Happy Birthday again coach,

Rafe Mata
Mindee, Andon, Isabella, and Alee
Hello and Happy Birthday Coach!  Chuck Wesson here.  I've been thinking a lot about you, the entire coaching staff and the guys from my years at Carter, over the last few months as Joe puts together this reunion of the '71 season team.  Wow!  A Thank You for all of your contributions towards making young men, better atheletes and people.  You instilled character, confidence and persistence.  I actually thought I could take Bobby when you called Wesson / Nix for one on ones... right up until I found myself on my back.  Of course, I didn't have that bulky 167 pounds that Tim Cappelli had going for him (lol!).  Thank you also, for all that potential you developed, that we never got to fully realize, in the form of my cousin Steve Landrum.  Any way... I do have a question before closing... Why was it that when you taped knees, you would always tape them just a little higher and a little lower than where we were shaving?  I wound up shaving my whole leg before it was over. lol!  Geez!  I can almost smell the Atomic Balm as I write this.  Happy Birthday and Many More Coach!!  Chuck Wesson
Happy Birthday, Coach Todd
My first memories of you were in junior high school.  Right after I made drill team you got the ominous task of coming to one of our classes and teaching us the basics of football - so we would cheer at the appropriate time!  Then in high school as our coach, drivers education instructor, and let's don't forget the awesome Texas History teacher that you were.  And then I was lucky enough that you went to the University of Houston the same time as Laurie Larimer and I did.  You probably don't remember, but when Christmas came that year, one of the freshmen football players (Paul Morrison) was selling Christmas trees, and you gave him the money to pay for a small tree that Laurie and I put in our dorm room. I will always remember you as a great role model who really cared about people.  I get to Houston occasionally, and Sheila has promised to take me to see you.  I look forward to seeing you soon.  All the best!

Don:
Fifty nine years ago I drew the short straw. The task was to escort a couple of recruits around the campus of HSU and show them a good time. Was not real sure what that meant but Coarch Carlos told me I better do a good job because they wanted you to come to HSU. Guess we did ok. That short straw was the beginning of a very long friendship that has survived many, many birthdays. Sherry and I wish you the best on your special day. Please give a hug to your better half.

how time flies!!!!

Don....congratulations on you birthday! you have always been a great friend of our family.we still remember all the trials and tribulations we endured with you over east texas recruits! you were the hardest working person we've ever known and it showed with your recruiting and with the way your boys have remained loyal to you. we tried to teach rafe to follow in your foot steps. you have been a wonderful example! when he got his first full time coaching assignment at UH , he said " now i guess i will have to learn to cut up a chicken," referring to the time you impressed hosea's mom by cutting up the chicken before she returned home. thanks for making our kids and us such a big part of cougar football..these memories( dressing room visits, the dome, on the floor of the cotton bowl, dinners) will be cherished forever and we are so glad we shared each one with you.again, congrats and love from the matas,cg and nina

What a great man

Happy birthday to my high school coach, college coach, counselor, mentor, driving instructor, and special friend to me and my family. You have been an inspiration and an example to follow. You were also a big reason I enter the coaching profession. Even after my playing days you continued to give me great advise and direction in coaching and life. The coaching staff that I brought to your house still talks about the things they learned. You have taught so many people the importance of hard work and helping others. "You can do it, don't give up, God will help you, and in America you can accompliish your dreams". Thanks for everything, but most of all thanks for your friendship. What great memories!

A Bright Young Man

Coach Todd, I remember when you arrived at Browne Jr. High as an assistant coach. I was scared about many things, the way junior high kids are. Somehow, I knew that your presence would make things better.
And then I saw you and Kay at church. My fears were further put to rest. From that day in the 60s until today those initial assumptions and assurances have never been in question. You never preached or prodded, only encouraged - and that with a good deal of smiling and laughter. Two things stand out from the early years...I had first period study hall at Carter and when it came time for Driver's Ed you and I would hit the road! I remember shopping for fishing gear - a worthy endeavor on school time. Then there was the Saturday morning on the field after the Richardson game, a 20-0 loss for the Cowboys. You lined us up shoulder-to-shoulder on the sideline of the practice field...went down the line...hugged each one of us and congratulated us for the effort. That loss was eclipsed by your recognition of the "fighting heart" attitude that was on display the night before. A loss? A hug? Character building. I thank God for the many people that instilled that in your life. It has made a difference in mine.
Susan and I, as you well know, named our first son Don Todd. I've have tried to pass along the blessings of character, moral fortitude, a cheerful spirit, and faith. So, as they say in the world of golf: your mentors, you, and I have "skin in the game" in our Don's life...and the blessings go on from generation to generation.
And besides all that, when we were in a "jam" you and Kay adopted our beloved pet, Penny. Now, that is duty above and beyond! Coach, I've know you for most of my life...and you have made a differrence.

Happy Happy Days !!!!!!

Happy Birthday Coach!

There's a reason you are loved so much by so many. Role model and mentor. We are all so blessed and better people for you having touched our lives. Know that it truly goes far beyond the people on these pages to the ones that all of our lives touch as well.
You make the world a better place and we hope you have another wonderful birthday!

God Bless, Reid and Lynne Hansen

GRACE

WHERE do you begin to "define" Coach Todd? "Grace" comes to mind... not a particularly manly sounding word...but nonethless... it's "undeserved acceptance of love received from another especially the characteristic attitude of God in providing salvation for sinners" (Kelly Minter). Coach Todd has shown me that "grace" of undeserved acceptance of love...characteristic of God and the attitude of God. He has blessed me beyond measure with his kindness, wisdom, support, hospitality, prayers, love, friendship and as a "Godfather" to our son. I am so thankful that God carved my path to include Coach Todd in my life. He has modeled such courage in trials and a faith that can move mountains. He models a work ethic that not only brings blessing, but IS the blessing! He loves his family with a heart as big as Texas. Thank you, Coach Todd, for your friendship. A friend loves at all times and you are that friend to me.

This Moment All

I have a friend that taught me this poem, and I want to share it with:

Mourn not the time that's logged.
As summer turns to fall....
The past is blurred, the future fogged.
What's real is NOW, this moment all.

It's not often that a young man meets a man, other than his father, who becomes such an important part of the fabric of his life. A man who teaches him, guides him, encourages him and strengthens his character. A man who sets an example for him of what a man should be..... What a lucky young man I was to have you, be that man for me. As I have grown older, these memories have become fonder and I thank God for your influence upon me. I know there are many other men who feel the same, and this too teaches me that love and true caring is so important to share with others. Thank you.

As the poem says the past gets a little blurry, but what really matters is now, and that you are still in my life and remain a dear friend that still teaches me. I continue to follow your guidance as I have ask Christ back into my heart. He has surrounded me with a "New Team" of wonderful christian men, that are helping me march to the goal line of life. Your my pulling left guard, busting the line and leading my way. Thank you.

Well Coach you made it to 70, so 80 shouldn't be so tough. Keep having fun and keep doing what you do so well. You are such a wonderful man, I am honored to be your friend...........

Love,
Tim Cappelli

A Man Of God

Don,

Since I met you when I was in High School and just knew you as Greg and Jennafer's Dad, I was impressed with you being a Godly man. As time allowed, you made church at Sugar Creek a priority and it was obvious that you knew the Lord. It wasn't long until I learned that you were a football coach at the University of Houston, and I was impressed with that. But I quickly learned from those who knew you that you were a Godly man on the football field, and I could see it when I watched you on the sidelines. It was obvious that you lived out your faith, and you cared for your players. As the years went by and I heard from my parents how you were dealing with your health, I was again impressed by your perseverance and commitment to the Lord through it all. Now that I have the privilege of being your Pastor, I continue to be amazed at what a Godly man you are day in and day out. You are constantly an example to the men of our church, your former players, the ranchers in the area, and your family. You are truly the example of a Godly man, and I praise God for you in my life. Happy 70th Birthday! You are a blessing!!

Coach, Example and Father-figure

Coach,
A day hardly goes by when I don't see one of the pictures of you and I on my office wall and fondly remember our time together during the Cougar's early days in the Southwest Conference. I am so thankful and blessed to have been given the opportunity to enjoy those early glory years, and most especially, because you were in them with me. I am so fortunate to have played under the guidance of the best Defensive Line Coach in the country, and one with impeccable integrity which has held up against the tests of time. I thank you for your faith and Godly example, both then and now, and for your genuine care and concern for me as a father figure, during those challenging years. I hope that you and your family enjoy a well deserved and wonderful 70th birthday together.
Thank You,
- Grady Ebensberger

Don, My Best Friend's Guy

Years ago when Kay told me about you I knew you had to be okay - because she chose you. Your coaching in Dallas was the only time our families lived near each other and then I found out what a great guy you really are. You must be a great coach (from all I have ever heard) but you have many other talents as well. For instance, the time you repaired out VW motor after you and Leon took it out and sat it on the picnic table in our garage! Then the time we showed up at your and Kay's apartment and you were at the sewing machine working on reupholstering your sofa. I was impressed!

Through the years you have never lost your dry sense of humor. You can still crack me up, even when Kay is just e-mailing me something you said.

Hope you have a wonderful birthday, Don. We'll be thinking of you.

Love, Carolyn and Leon Allard

To my friend, Don.

Don,

It has been a pleasure knowing you, and I cherish our friendship more that words can express.

Your quiet but tough mannerism has taught me a lot about life, and how to react to it.

I guess that if I had to pick one trait that I admire most about you it is your fantastic sense of humor and story-telling ability. I still chuckle when I remember your story about "Dog" putting his paws on the dash to brace himself when you approached a certain curve in
the road! What a picture!

Anyway, happy birthday Buddy, and I look forward to sharing many more.
